Kalm Therapy How it Works

What Does Treatment with Kalm Involve?

Kalm’s approach to ketamine therapy involves low-dose, buccal troches that are non-psychedelic, non-dissociative, and safe for most patients. This form of treatment is particularly beneficial for those struggling with anxiety or depression who have not found relief through
traditional therapies like antidepressants or counseling. Patients start with daily doses and, once they experience symptom relief, they are encouraged to gradually reduce their frequency of use.

Why is This Treatment Safe?

Ketamine is widely recognized for its safety profile and is even listed as an essential medicine by the World Health Organization. At Kalm, we take additional precautions to ensure the safety of our patients:

  • We only accept individuals who meet strict medical and psychiatric criteria.
  • Patients must complete daily check-ins to report any side effects or changes in their mental health.
  • Patients with specific health conditions require medical clearance before beginning treatment.

How is Ketamine Absorbed?

Bioavailability refers to the portion of a medication that is active in the body. For instance, intravenous (IV) administration has a 100% bioavailability because it goes directly into the bloodstream. Our buccal troches have a 20-25% bioavailability, influenced by factors like mouth
moisture and temperature.

Potential Medication Interactions?

Ketamine generally has minimal interactions with other drugs and does not affect the serotonin system, reducing the risk of serotonin syndrome when used alongside other psychiatric medications. Nevertheless, during your consultation, our medical team will carefully review your current medications to ensure compatibility.

Are There Health Conditions That Contraindicate Ketamine Use?

Although ketamine is safe for most, it’s not suitable for everyone. We do not treat individuals with a history of psychosis or those currently using medications like Suboxone, methadone, or Naloxone. Patients with certain medical conditions may also need additional medical clearance.

Is Ketamine Addictive?

In clinical settings with prescribed dosages, ketamine has a low potential for addiction. Our prescribed doses are much lower than those typically associated with addiction, which usually involve consuming 1-4 grams daily. Interestingly, ketamine has even been explored as a potential
treatment for addiction under controlled conditions.

Does Ketamine Raise Blood Pressure?

At higher doses, ketamine can cause a temporary spike in blood pressure, but this effect is rarely
seen at the lower buccal doses we prescribe. Any slight increase is similar to what might occur
during physical activity and is generally not a cause for concern.

What About Liver Safety?

Ketamine has a mild effect on the liver enzyme CYP450 but doesn’t pose significant risk for individuals without pre-existing liver conditions.

Safeguards Against Abuse and Misuse

Our buccal troches have a slow absorption rate, making them difficult to misuse. We closely monitor patient use, only issuing refills after a set period, and use multiple prescription monitoring systems. If a patient is found to have another active ketamine prescription, we require
consent from other providers or remove them from our program.

Why Do Patients Stop Treatment?

Most patients discontinue treatment because they feel significantly better and no longer need it. Only a minority stop due to side effects or other concerns.

What Sets Kalm Apart?

We prioritize consistent, low-dose ketamine therapy rather than high-dose, psychedelic experiences. This method helps patients achieve a state of relaxation and openness, facilitating lasting positive changes in their mental health.

Why Choose Telehealth?

We’re committed to making ketamine therapy accessible and affordable. By offering telehealth services nationwide, we ensure that this transformative treatment is available to those who might not otherwise have access, at the lowest cost possible.

Is Ketamine Safe for Home Use?

Yes, recent research supports the safety and efficacy of ketamine when used at home under proper medical supervision.

What Does a Psycholytic State Feel Like?

In a psycholytic state, patients often feel relaxed and experience reduced anxiety without any dissociation or hallucinations. They remain fully aware and can process emotions and thoughts more easily, without the drastic alterations in perception associated with psychedelic doses.

What is Ketamine's Half-Life?

Ketamine’s effects generally diminish within 2.5 hours, making its half-life relatively short.

How Does Psycholytic Dosing Differ from Psychedelic Dosing?

While psychedelic dosing can lead to profound changes in perception and ego-dissolution,
psycholytic dosing offers a more grounded experience. Patients remain fully conscious and can
gain new insights and perspectives with less resistance, making it ideal for therapeutic work.

Is Psycholytic Ketamine Suitable for Trauma Patients?

Absolutely. Because psycholytic ketamine does not cause dissociation or intense alterations in reality, it is considered safe and beneficial for individuals with PTSD or C-PTSD. It helps reduce anxiety and allows for a gentle exploration of trauma.
